Aircrete Dome

Since August 2022, we have been building an aircrete dome to provide additional overnight retreat space at St. Francis of the Woods. Aircrete is a lightweight, highly insulating material created by blending cement with foam, forming millions of tiny air cells within the mix. The result is a structure that is strong, energy efficient, fire resistant, mold resistant, and able to withstand extreme weather. This construction that aligns with our commitment to ecological stewardship and thoughtful use of resources. Unfortunately this construction is also highly specialized and labor intensive. Both of which are contributing to higher than expected costs and significant delays.

The exterior shell and stucco are now complete, protecting the structure from the elements. What remains is the interior buildout: flooring, electrical, lighting, plumbing, kitchen and bath finishes that will make this dome ready to welcome guests.

Our dome is being created primarily as a one-bedroom overnight retreat space nestled in the woods. It will include a living area, kitchen, and a studio space for writing, art, and creative work. Surrounded by trees and quiet, it is designed to offer guests a peaceful place to rest, pray, create, and renew.
